About

Name in Japanese and English

  • 湯島天満宮例大祭(湯島天神例大祭)
  • Yushima Tenmangū (Yushima Tenjin) Shrine Reitaisai

History

The Yushima Tenmangū Reitaisai (湯島天満宮例大祭, yushima tenmangū reitaisai) is the great annual ritual gathering (例大祭, reitaisai, "grand annual festival") of Yushima Tenmangū Shrine (湯島天満宮, yushima tenmangū), better known by its nickname Yushima Tenjin (湯島天神, yushima tenjin) in Bunkyō, Tōkyō. The shrine is dedicated to Tenjin (天神, tenjin), the tutelary deity of literature and studies, associated with Sugawara no Michizane (菅原道真, sugawara no michizane): this is why, throughout the year, people come here to pray for academic success, and why local attendance is very high during the festival.

The core of the festival remains the May 25th ceremony (例大祭祭典, reitaisai saiten, "main reitaisai service"); around this date, major weekend rites (大祭行事, taisai gyōji) may be added depending on the year. The "neighborhood" dimension is particularly present with the ujiko (氏子, ujiko, "parishioners of the shrine") and local associations, and sometimes more spectacular events, such as a sacred procession (神幸祭, shinkōsai) and/or mikoshi parades (神輿渡御, mikoshi togyo). Note: the scale varies greatly (some sources mention a "strong year" cycle), so the most reliable source is always the official program published for the current edition.

Event Location and Date

  • Location: Yushima Tenmangū (湯島天満宮, yushima tenmangū), also known as Yushima Tenjin (湯島天神, yushima tenjin), Bunkyō Ward (文京区, bunkyō-ku), Tōkyō (東京, tōkyō).
  • Address: 〒113-0034 東京都文京区湯島3-30-1 (3-30-1 Yushima, Bunkyō-ku, Tokyo 113-0034).

  • Date: annually around May 25th: main ceremony on May 25th (例大祭祭典, reitaisai saiten) and, depending on the year, events and mikoshi parades on the closest weekend (大祭行事, taisai gyōji).
  • Date type: mixed: fixed for the ceremony (May 25th), and variable for the highlights (scheduled for the weekend).

Schedule

The atmosphere is that of a true neighborhood festival, very "Tōkyō shitamachi": people come to give thanks, pray for success and protection, enjoy the stalls, and especially to see the city move to the rhythm of the shrine. The central point is the reitaisai ceremony (例大祭祭典, reitaisai saiten) on May 25th, to which highlights are added over one or two days, depending on the edition.

Regarding typical "scenes," you can find: offerings and dedications (奉納, hōnō), ritual dances/music of the sato kagura type (里神楽, sato kagura), performances (drums, etc.), and roten (露店, roten), the street stalls. When a procession is scheduled, the "wow" moment becomes the mikoshi parade (神輿渡御, mikoshi togyo) with neighborhood associations; some years, a sacred procession (神幸祭, shinkōsai) and a palanquin (鳳輦, hōren) are also seen alongside the mikoshi.

The easiest spot to enjoy without running everywhere is often the approach to the torii (鳥居, torii) and the shrine entrances/exits during the miyairi (宮入, miyairi, "entry of mikoshi into the precincts"). There, you get the best mix: energy, photos, and that "vibrant" feeling.

Practical Tips

Photography

Aim for the mikoshi arrivals (宮入, miyairi) near the torii (鳥居, torii) to capture faces, happi, and the crowd density. If you want a "cleaner" shot, arrive 30–45 min before a highlight to find a slightly elevated spot (steps/ramp). Lens recommendation: 35–50 mm for the scene, and 70–200 mm if you want to isolate expressions and details.

Weather

Late May in Tōkyō can already be mild to hot, with rising humidity. Pack light layers and especially something to manage standing around (cap, water). In case of rain, streets become slippery: shoes with good grip and a small rain cover for your camera.

Transportation

The simplest way: Tokyo Metro Yushima (湯島駅, yushima-eki) Exit 3, and you're practically "on site." On mikoshi days, streets can be temporarily crowded: prioritize arriving early and allow extra time for your return. If you're coming from Ueno/Okachimachi, the walk is short and pleasant.

Visitor Tips

If you want to avoid crowds, aim for the beginning of the day for the shrine atmosphere, then return for the highlights. Useful vocabulary: mikoshi (神輿, mikoshi), matsuri (祭り, matsuri), hōnō (奉納, hōnō, "offering/dedication"). And a classic that always works on site: sumimasen (すみません, sumimasen) to politely make your way through.

What to Bring

Cash (for stalls), water bottle, power bank, wipes, small poncho, and if you're coming for photos: camera strap (crowds) + microfiber cloth (humidity/rain).
